The Time Zombies Became the Least of My Worries by Jen Naumann

Story: Ever since the zombie virus hit Emma’s irritatingly boring Midwestern hometown, she’s been on the run with her old best friend-turned-boyfriend Finn. On their journey, they’ve witnessed some pretty disgusting deaths, narrowly escaped life-threatening escapades that sometimes included one of their own pulling a gun on them numerous times, and redefined the definition of what makes up a family (as it turns out, soldiers and geeks can be pretty decent). They’ve even learned the disturbing truth behind the mysterious virus. But after Emma was bit by one of the infected trying to save her neighbor boy, she was told she would not have long to live. In the thrilling sequel to The Day Zombies Ruined My Perfectly Boring Life, Finn will help to tell the story as Emma and the gang are faced with the most crucial life-changing decisions yet. They’ll come across an unfortunate group of rednecks, discover the truth of what happened to Finn’s federal agent mother, and finally see a chance at truly being safe without having to run anymore. But in the middle of it all, Emma and Finn’s relationship will soar to completely uncomfortable levels when Finn takes things one step too far. And between being injected with an unknown liquid, taking on a completely unexpected (and really agitating alliance), and being left for dead by those she loves most, Emma will realize that zombies are the least of her worries.

OUR RATING: 5 OUT OF 5 BRAIN EATING STARS

REVIEW: The Time Zombies Became the Least of My Worries is the sequel to The Day Zombies Ruined My Perfectly Boring Life, which we are huge fans of. The sequel did not disappoint. It started off at the same point the first book ended. All the characters were back and many of our unanswered question were finally answered. We actually love this book more than the first. But don’t get us wrong the first book is still amazing. Emma is one of our favorite characters in this series. She’s funny and honest. We loved watching her grow in the second book. Emma is not one to wait to get rescued, she takes charge and easily can be considered a hero. At least she’s our hero. Finn is still as dreamy as ever. He’s so protective of Emma. Watching their relationship continue to evolve is fantastic. In this book we also get to go into Finn’s thoughts since he is also the narrator. We think we love him even more. Every character in this book has something to contribute and well developed. The action in the second book continues to be top notch. This book will make you laugh out loud and even shed some tears. Most of all this book will make you fall in love with Jen’s writing.

So turn off the Walking Dead Marathon and read The Time Zombies Became the Least of My Worries.

Author’s Corner: Raelke Grimmer

We here at Forever YA fiction love to interview authors. It’s a way as readers to get to know the minds of these amazing writers. Today we are excited to bring to you our interview with Raelke Grimmer author of  Sleepwalking.

Please tell us what Sleepwalking is about?

Sleepwalking takes place in a world where people don’t sleep, because the water supply has been contaminated with a drug which makes it no longer necessary to sleep. Kyla is 16, and her father is the person who created the drug. But then the drug stops working, and people start falling into deep sleep and not waking up. The world blames Kyla’s father, and Kyla suddenly finds herself trapped between two realities.

What was your inspiration for this story?

I’ve always been fascinated by sleep, ever since I studied it in Psychology at high school, and the fact that while there are theories, no one really knows why humans need to sleep. It also seems to me that in today’s world, people are busier and busier and are trying to get by on less and less sleep. People want 24 waking hours each and every day- I started wondering what would happen if that became a reality.

Are any characters or the story based on any real people or events?

No.

Who was your favorite character to develop?

I actually really enjoyed developing Ty, Kyla’s boyfriend, because of where the events in the novel take him, and it even surprised me as I was writing the direction his character went.

When did you become interested in writing?

I’ve always loved reading, and when I was still very young I got the idea that maybe I could one day write books, too. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer.

Do you have any writing rituals?

Not really. I write pretty much anywhere, fitting it in wherever I can between work and study.

What word do you always have trouble spelling correctly?

Receive- I know it is “I before E except after C”, but somehow when I type it, I always reverse the letters, and Word always has to autocorrect me.

Which author or book inspired you to write? And which authors inspire you today?

To be perfectly honest, the Little Sister and Baby-Sitters Club books by Ann M Martin! I was fascinated by the elaborate worlds she created, perfected and wrote about in those books. Those two series are what got me into reading, and then made me want to be a writer.

Today, I’m inspired by so many different writers- Douglas Adams, Markus Zusak, Matthew Reilly, Melina Marchetta, Shaun Tan. I find David Malouf so inspiring- his prose is so beautiful. It flows along like poetry and the reader can’t help but be drawn into the worlds in his novels.

What advice do you have for anyone who would like to be an author?

Sit down at your computer, or pick up a pen or pencil, and start writing. Write anything! And if you can’t write, read- and read everything.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on a new young adult eSeries for BigWorldNetwork.com, which will launch on the website in mid December.

If you could have one superpower which one would it be?

To know and be able to speak and write every single language in the world.

We like to thank Raelke  for joining us in our Author’s Corner.

Make sure to check out her book Sleepwalkers

Because of You by Maria E. Monteiro

STORY: Six years ago Austin broke Jade’s heart. OUR RATING: 5 OUT OF 5 FIRST LOVE STARS

REVIEW: As Young Adult readers we have completely fallen in love with this book. It’s what YA is all about. We had a hard time putting this book down. In fact one of us even had to survive after only sleeping for three hours at work because she couldn’t put her Kindle down. We love that Jade and Austin actually fall in love at a slow pace, but at the same time not too slow where you’re banging your head on the wall. Jade is sixteen and acts sixteen. It was exciting to see her grow through the story. Our heart broke and cheered for her. Jade made us laugh and made us mad, but most of all she made us want to fall in love with Austin too. Okay lets talk about the new love of our lives: Austin Evans. Austin is the best boyfriend ever. We love how he doesn’t give up on Jade even when she pushing him away. Now what Jade and Austin go through with him deciding on a college, and Jade having to deal with it reminded some of us about being in high school and going through the same exact thing. We knew exactly how she felt. It brought us right back to that time. We also found ourselves wrapped in the story about Jade’s parents’ divorce. From the first chapter we thought we were gong to hate the father, but that didn’t happen. He actually dug himself into our hearts. Maria has an amazing talent for giving each one of her characters good and bad qualities which makes the reader hate them and love them at the same time. Because of You made us laugh, get mad, cry our eyes out, but most of all it made us fall in love. This is a very sweet story about falling in love for the first time that will touch your heart.

So take a minute and remember your first love, and then read Because of You

Excerpt:

I run out the door into the hot sticky August night air just as my tears begin to stream down my face. How can my father do this to us? Aren’t Carrie and me enough for him? How could he think this was something to celebrate? I will never forgive him for this.

I continue running, trying to breath in the thick air. I run down the parking lot until SMACK! My body bounces right off someone’s hard chest and fall backwards onto the inflexible wet ground.

“Whoa! Are you okay?” I hear a deep voice ask. He gives me his warm hand and helps me up.

“Yeah,” I answer, as the pain throbbing in my chest now travels down my body.

“Are you sure?” I look up at him and roll my eyes in revulsion. Why out of everyone in the world, do I have to bump into Austin Evans? He makes me sick.

His dark eyes narrow with concern and I remember I have tears in my eyes. He must think he’s the one who hurt me.

I yank my arm out of his grip. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

“Look, if you’re hurt…”

“I said I’m fine.” I continue to walk down the parking lot. I have no idea where I’m going. My dad drove so it’s not like I have a ride. Damn it!

“Hey,” Austin calls out running behind me.

“What?” I don’t stop walking.

“You don’t look like you’re okay. Do you need me to call someone for you? Or…”

“No. Just leave me alone,” I spit out, without looking back. I don’t need this right now. All I want to do is crawl under my covers and cry my eyes out.

“Where’re you going?”

I don’t say a word.

“Do you…”

“Austin!” A girl calls out. This time we both stop walking and look back at Leah Turner with her lips twisted up into a phony smile. Of course it’s her! Where ever Austin is Leah is sure to follow. “Where are you going?”

“Nowhere. I was just making sure that umm…” He looks at me once again acting like he doesn’t know my name. He’s so full of shit. I can’t stand him.

“Jade,” I remind him.

His look of concern disappears as the corners of his mouth point up producing an annoying smile. “I know who you are, Jade Miller.”

Does he want an award or something for remembering my whole name?

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“She looks fine,” Leah calls out trying her best to sound sweet.

Leah and me do not have a good relationship. She blames me for our cheerleading team losing at finals last year. It’s not my fault I walked out half way through the routine. My dad had just sat down with Trisha, and instead of watching his daughter cheer he was too busy shoving his old tongue into her disgusting mouth. Just another thing my father is responsible for ruining.

“Look, she’s right. I’m fine,” I reassure him, wanting to get away from him and this moment.

“Where are you going?” he asks.

“Home.” I turn around and continue to walk away from him.

He follows right behind me again. “Do you need a ride?”

“Aren’t you on a date or something?”

“What? No. I’m meeting a couple of friends, but it’s okay. I can take you home.” I spin back around to see him smile again making his dimples appear. I hate those damn things. They drive all the girls at school wild, but they have the opposite affect on me.

A long time ago Austin was my best friend. He was the person who I shared all my secrets with. He was the person who knew I broke my sister’s iPod. He was the person who held me when my grandma died. He knew everything about me as I knew everything about him. But that was six years ago. Now all I know about him is his growing list of hook ups, while all he knows about me is my name.
